The Hero of the Day

Dorie Miller

Being an African American, Dorie Miller (at first) wasn't allowed to fight or do most things in the Navy. He was a cook for the Navy but was also a Hero. In 1942 Dorie Miller received the Navy Cross which is the second highest award that could be earned. While battling in World War II, when was attacked by the Japanese, Dorie shot down at least one of the Japanese plane and saved the Generals life. In this battle the ship called the "U.S.S West Virginia" sank and along with that he was stranded in the sea. He was born int he year of 1919 and died in 1943. The portrait of Dorie Miller is like evidence that he was on the sea were the ship was sinking and it had been hit by something because of the smoke. This is implied that he was a legacy and not just a man.

My Dorie Miller Experience

Mr. Miller was the first and only to receive the Navy Cross. Also, the only African American to receive that award. In his picture that states "above and beyond the call of duty". I think it means he went all out for his job. He did more more than anybody ever done. He couldn't be in the Navy just yet, he was a cook. He was a cook because all African Americans couldn't do what the whites did. Some blacks well African Americans were Mess Attendants. The Navy Cross was the second highest from the honorable award. Dorie received the Navy Cross in May 27, 1942. Dorie was born in1919. He died in 1943. The man that awarded him with Navy Cross was Mr.Roosevelt. Frank Knox that was called "top dog"who put the award on Mr. Miller's uniform. The ship that Dorie Miller died on the U.S.S Liscomb Bay. The U.S.S West Virginia was the shop when he was brave an shot the Japanese ship to save his co-worker. In December 7,1941 was when he was in Pearl Harbor bombing. The portrait of Dorie Miller was made by David Stone Martin, in 1943.

Dorie Miller was born in 1919 Waco, Texas. He came into the navy in 1939 as a mess attendant at that time African Americans were not allowed to serve in combat capacities aboard ships. He was the first African American that received a second place award for the highest honor( Navy Cross). In January 1940, he transferred to West Virginia when he became the heavyweight boxing champion. Also, he was one of the survivors from Thee Pearl Harbor attack. In his honor Dorie Miller received five awards for his doings. Some people have been calling him Dorie when that was his nickname. His real name is Doris " Dorie" Miller. A actor played a role for Dorie Miller which is called Pearl Harbor. My class should be called after an incredible man like him beacuse he was brave and intelligent. My class is just the best, no one class could be like us.
