My Dorie Miller Experience

Mr. Miller was the first and only to receive the Navy Cross. Also, the only African American to receive that award. In his picture that states "above and beyond the call of duty". I think it means he went all out for his job. He did more more than anybody ever done. He couldn't be in the Navy just yet, he was a cook. He was a cook because all African Americans couldn't do what the whites did. Some blacks well African Americans were Mess Attendants. The Navy Cross was the second highest from the honorable award. Dorie received the Navy Cross in May 27, 1942. Dorie was born in1919. He died in 1943. The man that awarded him with Navy Cross was Mr.Roosevelt. Frank Knox that was called "top dog"who put the award on Mr. Miller's uniform. The ship that Dorie Miller died on the U.S.S Liscomb Bay. The U.S.S West Virginia was the shop when he was brave an shot the Japanese ship to save his co-worker. In December 7,1941 was when he was in Pearl Harbor bombing.
